Hints and Tips for Working With Fresh Evergreens

by Andrée Sales

Whether they're indoors or outdoors, evergreens require special care:

1. Always wear gloves and long sleeves when handling evergreens, even when working inside. Many evergreens are prickly and can leave small barbs in hands and cause rashes on arms.
2. Use baby oil to remove sap if it gets on your skin.
3. During the holiday there is nothing nicer then bringing the fresh scent of evergreen into your home. However, being a winter green, evergreens have little tolerance for our heated homes. A light misting will help keep them hydrated. Evergreens should be viewed as a short term accent to your decor. Decorations should be installed as close to Christmas as possible and removed shortly after to prevent a fire hazard.
4. When hanging garland outdoors, secure nails or fasteners at a 45 degree angle, approximately 4 to 6 inches from the corners of the door jam. This will keep the garland “lifted” above the door—and you won’t have to duck!
5. Before creating outdoor urns, re-cut the stems of the greenery, berries and branches and place them in a bucket of water overnight. This process hydrates the materials for longer-lasting freshness.
