Hints
and Tips for Working With Fresh Evergreens
by Andrée Sales
Whether they're indoors or outdoors, evergreens require special
care:
| 1. |
Always wear gloves and long sleeves
when handling evergreens, even when working inside. Many evergreens
are prickly and can leave small barbs in hands and cause rashes
on arms. |
| 2. |
Use baby oil to remove sap if it
gets on your skin. |
| 3. |
During the holiday there is nothing
nicer then bringing the fresh scent of evergreen into your home.
However, being a winter green, evergreens have little tolerance
for our heated homes. A light misting will help keep them hydrated.
Evergreens should be viewed as a short term accent to your decor.
Decorations should be installed as close to Christmas as possible
and removed shortly after to prevent a fire hazard. |
| 4. |
When hanging garland outdoors, secure
nails or fasteners at a 45 degree angle, approximately 4 to
6 inches from the corners of the door jam. This will keep the
garland “lifted” above the door—and you won’t
have to duck! |
| 5. |
Before creating outdoor urns, re-cut
the stems of the greenery, berries and branches and place them
in a bucket of water overnight. This process hydrates the materials
for longer-lasting freshness. |
